UTILITARIAN CUPBOARD

A tall single-door cupboard of the most direct construction — wide planks nailed vertically across the door face, the sides and base built from the same unfinished timber, the whole case held together with cut nails and honest joinery. The wood has dried and bleached unevenly over two centuries, the surface pale and chalky at the center, darker at the edges where the planks are thicker. The original wooden latch sits at center, simple and intact. No moulding, no panel, no ornament of any kind. A piece built entirely in service of what it held, and has arrived here looking exactly like what it is.
