THE MALLET

A large wooden mallet of entirely honest construction, the rectangular head mortised through by the handle in the traditional manner — the joint tight and unmoving after more than a century of hard use. The handle is a single piece of hardwood, slightly irregular in section and darkened along its length by generations of grip, a small leather cord tied at the end. The head is dense and squared, the striking faces worn and checked from decades of work. No two surfaces are quite parallel, no edge quite sharp — everything softened and marked by use.
