SPLINT OAK BERRY BASKET

Splint oak baskets of substantial scale, woven from wide, flat strips of split oak in a plain over-under pattern that has remained A signature in American and European folk basketry for centuries. The rectangular form with gently flared sides and a wrapped rim speaks to a working life. These were used as field baskets, made to be filled and carried and filled again. The oak has darkened and dried into a deep, uniform grey-brown, the splints worn smooth at the high points of the weave. Each one slightly different in dimension and character.
