SCULPTURAL FOLD-FLAT PLYWOOD CHAIR

This lounge chair is cut from one rectangular sheet of plywood. The back, seat, sides and base are traced from the panel as interlocking curved shapes and joined with small metal hinges. Folded up, the pieces slot into one another to form a low, reclining chair with a curving back pierced by an oval handhold, scalloped seat edges, and broad side panels that act as both arms and legs. Opened out, it lies flat as a single white panel, with the outline of every part drawn in fine cut lines across its surface. It reads both as a chair and as a relief for the wall. The white paint shows chips, scuffs and bare wood at the edges and joints, and the cut lines have darkened with handling.
