JOSEPH SAVINA
FRANCE, 1930'S
15½" x 15¼" x 31¼"

Trained in the traditions of Breton woodworking, Joseph Savina (1901–1983) became one of the few artisans to translate regional vernacular into the idiom of modern design. A collaborator of Le Corbusier and champion of the Seiz Breur movement, Savina drew from rural forms and then refining them with clean lines and restrained geometry of the avant-garde. This chair, with its architectural backrest and quiet chromatic accent, reflects his conviction that modernity could be built upon the enduring language of local craft.
