QUEEN ANNE ARMCHAIR

A solid walnut Queen Anne armchair of refined, unhurried form, the back built around a vase-shaped splat rising to a yoke-shaped crest rail which is the signature silhouette of the style, borrowed from Chinese chair forms and refined into something entirely English. The cabriole legs flow from the seat in a continuous S-curve to terminate in restrained pad feet, underscoring the sculptural nature of the form, while the scrolled arms curl outward at the hand rest in a gesture that is both practical and elegant. The walnut has deepened over three centuries to a rich, dark tone. The drop-in seat is upholstered in olive green fabric. The style relied on beautiful woods and simple contours for its effect, with emphasis on quiet dignity and no special tricks of turning or carving a philosophy this chair embodies completely.
