A five-piece Croissant sofa by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois, the form built entirely from the logic of the rounded cushion — each module swelling into the next in a continuous, uninterrupted line of voluminous dark chocolate fabric. The voluptuous curves and undulating lines combine to form a design whose name it earns entirely, each cushion seamlessly flowing into the next to create an interconnected whole. Hopfer, primarily a sculptor and painter, brought a biomorphic sensibility to all his seating work for Roche Bobois — the Croissant sits alongside the Mah Jong and the Dromadaire as one of his most celebrated designs for the house. The upholstery is a deep, matte brown fabric that reads almost black in shadow, the generous seat depth and low profile placing the piece firmly in the post-modern comfort aesthetic of the late 1970s. A significant piece of design history that sits as well in a contemporary room as it did fifty years ago.
